The Royal Hotel, Lancaster being located in the centre of the city offers easy walking to the town centre, shopping arcades and many of the city's historical monuments.
Lancaster Castle overlooks the Lune River and is still a working prison. The Judges Lodgings and Maritime Museum offer a look back at the city's land and sea history.
Overlooking the city is the Ashton Memorial built by Sir William Ashton as a memorial to his wife. Williamson's park in which the memorial is located offers peace and tranquility in a beautiful setting with the added attraction of the butterfly house which houses many rare and beautiful species. From the monument you can see across to the Lake District and see the Penines as they run through Lancashire into Cumbria.
A few miles away is the coastal resort of Morecambe and the historic village of Heysham with the ancient churches of St Patricks and St Peters situated on the headland overlooking the bay, offering oudstanding views of the Lake District mountains and fells. From Heysham the ferry runs daily to the Isle of Man.
